Holiday List: Earth Day Edition

It’s Earth Day, but I didn’t do much to celebrate because I was working. My office building is super into the green life, so this week the management made it easy for us to shred documents (which I guess are then recycled?), and recycle batteries, plastic bags and shoes (to go to people who need nice shoes), so I recycled five pairs of shoes and a bunch of plastic bags. Yesterday I ordered all the ingredients to make my own laundry detergent and various cleaning products, but, honestly, I didn’t really do that for saving-the-earth reasons — I did it because I hate inhaling nasty fumes when cleaning and I’ve recently become paranoid about the number of chemicals I expose myself to.

I will post the recipes to the cleaning products after I use them and decide how much I like them. I have high hopes that they will be awesome. For now, I thought I’d give you a little list of recipes for home-made beauty products with all-natural ingredients! I have tested all of these and I love them. When I make them, I feel like I’m a witch that makes awesome potions, like Sandra Bullock in Practical Magic. Yes, really. I love that movie. :/

Ok, let’s get listy…

My fave ingredients for natural beauty goods:

Coconut oil — smells good and is super versatile

Almond oil — smells soooo yummy

Beeswax — for lipgloss!

Essential oils — I like mint, coconut and citrus scents, but there are tons you can use

Pure aloe jelly — Seriously, it fixes EVERYTHING.

Lip Gloss Made for Smoochin

1 tsp coconut oil

1 tsp almond oil

1/2 tsp grated beeswax

–Mix ingredients. You can melt them together for about a minute in the microwave, but I like using the water bath method. Put the ingredients in a small glass and then put this glass in a small pot that’s about 1/2 full of water. Put the pot on the stove on low heat — as the water heats up, the ingredients in the glass will melt together! Poor melted ingredients into a clean container and let cool completely for at least 20 minutes. Rub on your lips and enjoy!

Sugar Mama Body Scrub

Mix 2 parts brown sugar with 1 part oil. My favorite is to use 2 cups tightly packed brown sugar with 1/2 cup coconut oil and 1/2 cup almond oil. You can add 1/2 tsp vanilla extract and it will smell so goooood. Using oils in the shower can lead to more required tub scrubbing, but this scrub is totally worth it. I like using it before shaving my legs because I get a great shave and my legs get super moisturized. Win. (ps — I’m totally making a natural tub scrubbing cleanser this weekend!)

Soak It up!

Mix 1 cup of epsom salts, 1/4 cup baking soda (or kosher salt) and a few drops (more or less, depending on your nose sensitivity) of an essential oil. Put mixture into a container (jar, bucket, ziploc bag) and seal tightly. Add 1/4 cup of the mixture to your bath under running water. Relax!

Enjoy πŸ™‚
